Dr. Christopher Tucker is chairman of the American Geographical Society, and serves on the boards of the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation and the Open Geospatial Consortium. He is the author of “A Planet of 3 Billion: Mapping Humanity’s Long History of Ecological Destruction and Finding Our Way to a Resilient Future”

Without dealing with bringing human population into balance with what Earth is capable of supporting, we can’t fully accomplish the rewilding work it will take to restore and protect all life on this planet.

Jack started Rewilding work as Executive Director of Sky Island Alliance in the mid-1990’s, organizing the Sky Island Wildlands Network design, ripping up illegal roads on forest service lands, installing wolf acclimatization pens on Ted Turner’s Ladder Ranch & conducting howling surveys to help make way for the final stage of the Lobo reintroduction program in the Southwest.
Through the years, Jack has worked with Dave Foreman and the Rewilding Gang to further Rewilding initiatives and education.

Very good ideas. The trouble about daring to say that a Planet of 3 billion peope woud be ideal is that there are people who will say immegiately, “You see, they want to kill us off, that’s why there is the Covid pandemic, etc. etc.
There are the Georgia Guidestones (I think that’s the name) with a very low number of humans on Earth written on them as the ideal.

Yes that’s been the standard opening salvo for some people since at least the 1960’s. Their goal is undoubtedly to shut down meaningful conversation around population by making an extreme statement like that one. We have to just flow around such folks. They have no desire to sit and have any meaningful discussion, or learn anything, about population.

It looks like the code on how to talk about overpopulation has finally been cracked.
I hope so. I know I have a better plan for entering a population discussion now, at least.
